Are Fitness Trackers Worth It?

These days, it’s hard to miss the growing discussion about fitness trackers — whether it’s about apps for your smartphone or wearable devices. But you may also find yourself wondering: are fitness trackers worth it? Your answer to this question is going to depend on a number of factors. Here are a few thoughts to ponder as you look into your next workout equipment purchase.

Are Fitness Trackers Worth It?

New fitness trackers include smartphone apps, pedometers, waistband accelerometers, and more. They range in price from just a few dollars (for an iPhone app) to $250 (for a Fitbit). Their functions are numerous, but most users use them to record data like the number of steps they take a day.

One question consumers may have concerns the accuracy of these devices for tracking their fitness workouts — can they really precisely document your fitness levels throughout the day, and are there differences between the devices when it comes to accuracy? Recent research suggests that differences do exist but are pretty minimal. According to a recent CBS report, apps and wearables tended to be relatively accurate, though it was found that wearable devices were slightly less accurate than smartphone apps, and pedometers were more accurate than either of the other two devices.

Even so, it seems that cost-conscious consumers can opt for a smartphone app—which only costs a few dollars—for reliable accuracy. On the other hand, most consumers aren’t going to want to carry a clunky phone around while they exercise, meaning that a wearable might still be preferable for runners.

Of course, as researchers readily acknowledge, fitness trackers don’t matter much if you’re not practicing a healthy lifestyle. Sure, they can track your fitness levels, but they won’t necessarily change them. For that, consumers need to take different steps. According to Mitesh Patel, the senior author of a new study of such devices, “[b]eing accurate is a start but to get people to actually change and be more physically active, the fitness tracker has to be paired with more engagement strategies,” including better incentives to motivate people to exercise.
