Now that you have established a fitness routine and are sticking to your goals, you may wonder if there is a such thing as too much exercise. According to a new study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, there is some evidence that it is possible to overdo it when it comes to exercise. So, can you exercise too much? While it may be possible, there are plenty of reasons why it is not likely.
In a study by researchers at the University of Illinois and Kaiser Permanente, 3,000 people were evaluated over the course of 25 years. They were divided into three categories based on the amount of time the exercised (whether they met the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week, did not reach that goal, or exceeded the 150 minutes).
The study showed that those who exercised more than 7.5 hours a week (which is three times more than the 150 minutes per week guideline) had an above average risk of coronary artery calcification.
Should I be Concerned?
The vast majority of people do not reach this level of exercise, and in fact, a lack of exercise is a much greater problem. In the United States, most people are not even close to getting the recommended amount of exercise each week.
The calcium buildup in active people may not be responsible for any health problems down the road. Although calcification of the arteries in sedentary people has been proven to lead to health issues, this may not be so for fit people. Because the body accumulates calcium to recover from stress and inflammation, marathon runners or endurance athletes may show higher levels of calcium in the arteries, but the function is still better than those who have calcification but are sedentary.
